Understanding MCP

Distinguish an instruction package from a tool connection, and inspect the host, server and permission boundaries before using an MCP-enabled workflow.

01 / Connection context

Three pieces with different responsibilities

The Model Context Protocol documentation describes a host application, its clients and servers that provide context or capabilities. Servers can expose tools, resources and prompts. A tool may perform an action; a resource supplies context; a prompt provides an interaction template. These are not interchangeable with an AgentGrid instruction package.

02 / Connection context

Local and remote connections differ

The documented transports include standard input/output for local processes and Streamable HTTP for remote communication. Local software can have access to the machine where it runs; a remote service has its own operator and access controls. Check the actual server documentation, supported protocol version and host compatibility instead of assuming an MCP label guarantees either safety or interoperability.

03 / Connection context

Review the authority, not just the name

AgentGrid recommends identifying who operates the server, what data it can read, what it can change and how access is revoked. Start with the narrowest access that can complete the task. A useful agent page should name required tools and permissions explicitly. Do not paste tokens into public instructions, examples, reviews or submissions.

04 / Connection context

No automatic connection from this directory

This page is protocol guidance, not an MCP server listing or installation action. AgentGrid has not connected a server on your behalf. Before a future server listing is approved, its setup, permission boundary, version support and failure behavior must be reviewed. Follow the selected host’s confirmation flow and inspect proposed tool actions before consequential changes.

Check before you continue.

  • Identify the host, server operator, transport and supported protocol versions.
  • Check read/write scope, data handling, credential storage and revocation instructions.
  • Test a bounded task and a denied operation before relying on the connection.

AgentGrid does not ask you to paste an API key or connect an account on this page. Any provider access, subscription or usage charge is separate.
