Content / Choosing a starting point

Improve expression without changing the facts.

Find resources for article structure, plain language, source-bounded repurposing and image alternatives that preserve the meaning of your original material.

Choose a task you can check.

Before editing, identify what may change and what must remain exact. Structure, length and tone are editorial choices; names, quantities, quotations and obligations need source checks. A plain-language rewrite should retain qualifications even when they complicate a sentence. Image alternatives need the purpose of the image on the page, not only a list of visible objects. Give the resource a real reader and a concrete use for the finished text.

Path 01

Make the argument easier to follow

Choose a structure editor when the information is present but poorly ordered. Ask for a change ledger so you can inspect moved or removed material.

Path 02

Adapt for a reader or format

Choose a plain-language or repurposing resource when the source is settled. Specify the reader’s task and retain caveats that affect meaning.

Bring these inputs.

  • The source passage or visual description with the context in which it will appear.
  • The intended reader, desired length and a list of facts or quotations that must be preserved.

Know what good looks like.

Compare factual claims and direct quotations with the source. For image alternatives, check whether the description conveys the information needed in that page context.

When to pause

If the source does not support a new example or factual claim, label the gap or remove the addition. Fluent transitions do not make invented details acceptable.
